Technology Vision 2020 - Advanced Materials and Processing - India

While up-dating my list of earlier and much appreciated colleagues in metallurgy, materials and related industries, I came across this foresight activity carried out by colleagues in Materials & Processing in India.

"Materials & Processing : Technology Vision 2020" is reported on the attractive Gov. of India backed website dedicated to Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) .

As chief metallurgist, team leader and co-ordinator of the technical assistance "Know-How" team, I had the enormous pleasure to assist senior management of the MIDHANI project under its first Chairman Dr. Tamhanka during the successful first commissioning of their brand new plant designed for special steels and alloy manufacturing. Plant commissioned : EAF-VIR-electric arc furnace - vacuum induction refining unit, AIM-Air Induction Melting VIM-Vacuum Induction Melting VAR- Vacuum Arc Remelting and ESR-Electroslag Remelting (1979)

Full commercial production from the entire integrated plant : melting-remelting, transformation forging, rolling, extrusion, and finishing; machining,polishing...h began in 1983.

Best regards to all concerned and belated good wishes 2010.

More information upon request.

Materials Science and Engineering Defined: Science and Engineering Indicators 2010 released by US National Science Board (NSB), Jan15.

US lead in Science and engineering could be "cracking-up" according to NSB SEI 2010 Committee Member J-Marie Griffiths.

Truely an ebook:
Science and Engineering Indicators 2010 released by US National Science Board (NSB), Jan15.

Apologies to IE users, Congratulations to FireFox...

I have just discovered and now rectified an IE browser problem on all my blogs. Unknown to me one of my widgets made my blogs inaccessible with this very popular browser. The incriminated widget has now been replaced by a similar approach "Blidget" from Widgetbox. I trust that readers will no longer encounter hindrance. I naturally hope that such incidents will no longer result in loss of followers and any click through revenue from what I believe to be relevant and informative adverts brought to readers by AdSense. Amazingly the widget problem did not result in loss of access using the FireFox browser. I now believe my posts will be accessible via both these majors and all browsers of my readers choice. If readers and followers experience further hindrance please do not hesitate to drop me a note, if possible.

FT-Financial Times presents "Wind Power and Alternative Energies and Uses" - Video Series-COP15 Timely.

COP15 Timely video series from Financial Times on the Economics of Offshore Wind-Power, (with Joe Hogan, ABB CEO.) Fledgling industry plagued by cost concerns There are even a couple of remarks on material failures and their consequences for Materials Science and Engineering Professionals. The series continues with an impressive number of videos covering a comprehensive range of related policy issues. Influence of the coming elections in UK are
remarked upon. Other videos in the series of note are an Interview with Lord Browne ex-Chairman of BP and currently President of the Royal Institute of Engineering (UK), Sir Stuart Rose Chairman of M&S, Start and stopping the series is easy and robust. For example, I am listening to the Video Series and writing this blog post simultaneously.

An easy reference link has been added to my Video Dedicated Pages and may be found in the vertical LHS menu bar

1. Fledgling industry plagued by cost concerns. with Joe Hogan ABB CEO.

2. Business has an essential role to play in the Climate Debate.

3. Less 'greenwash' and more action. with Richard Brown CEO Eurostar.

4. Lord Browne, President RAE"

Some main conclusions are:
1. that energy efficiency must be a major aim. (Joe Hogan ABB)
2. that even this will eventually be insufficient and alternatives will be required. (Richard Brown).
3. COP15 must produce a road map to tackle CC understanding fully the differing situations faced by different nations. (Lord Browne)

"Climate Gate"

There have been noises to similar unnamed unspecified mail(email?) exchanges between scientist on French News. It is extremely easy to quote and, if unethical, abuse a standard good working practise among scientists. Another good practise in scientific research is to publish with references .

Media and polemicists could help advance solutions to what many consider the main problem facing humanity today, namely "energy-climate change" by being equally ethical.

Chemical Sensing and Imaging Technology (hyperspectral imaging) to monitor (and model) vegetation globally will certainly help improve strategies to mitate CO2 emission behaviour and help measure the effects of Climate Change

The game's up - No weed, hopefully will go un-noticed by this most powerful COP (slang for policeman).

As the world, "once again" will meet to discuss GWG-global warming gases notebly CO2 emissions and Climate Change in Copenhagen (COP15) David Bannon CEO of Headwell Photonics reports in Nature Photonics Nov.09 Vol 3 p629 and acknowledges this Hyperspectral chemical sensing and imaging contribution from in two important US Space Agencies Sigma Space Centre and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre's Dr. Elizabeth Middleton.

Read the full story at the links provided. This extract focuses on Box 1 of the article but the principles of hyperspectral chemical sensing and imagery are delt with in D.Bannon's article.
