I referenced Crichton's end notes on Genes Patenting. I believe this to be a serious enough issue to reproduce Crichton's well thought through main point conclusions. Of course he fully develops arguments in detail at the end of his thriller, NEXT.
Crichton's 5 point advice on gene patenting and tissue ownership.
1. Stop patenting genes!
2. Establish clear guidelines for the use of human tissues.
3. Pass laws to ensure that data about gene testing is made public.
4. Avoid bans on research.
5. Rescind the Bayh-Dole Act.
